LAS VEGAS (July 19, 2026)–Matt Mitchell (Championship), Ed Fryatt (Senior) and John Turk (Silver) won gross titles in the 2026 Southern Nevada Amateur. Michael Yap (Net), Mike Brocki (Senior) and Barry Boudreaux (Silver) claimed net titles in the Nevada Golf Southern Region tournament held July 18-19, 2026, at the Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort’s Sun Mountain course.–by Bill Bowman
Championship
Matt Mitchell overcame a wild start to the tournament–an eagle, two pars and three bogeys over his first six holes–to win for the fifth time in 2026.
Mitchell turned it around the second day with an eight-birdie effort in winning by four strokes.
“It was just a great round,” Mitchell said of his Sunday effort. “This course is so good and the greens are great. If you hit good shots, you’re going to give yourself plenty of chances and I managed to take advantage of a few today.”
He said his play the final day was smooth.
“I was behind but playing pretty well,” he said. “I needed to do more than hit it well…I needed to make some birdies and I did that today.”
He added one of the key holes was No. 7, his 16th hole of the day.
“I was in the bunker on the par-5 and hit a hybrid to about 15 feet,” he said. “I didn’t make the eagle putt but made the birdie. That was just a huge hole for me.”

Michael Yap recorded a net eagle and 12 net birdies over the two days in winning for the first time in 2026.
He won late in 2025 for his first title.
“I played really well today,” Yap said. “And I putted very well. I didn’t have any three putts today and I can’t remember the last time I didn’t three-putt.”
Yap said the members of his group were also a key to the win.
“I’ve got to give a shout-out to Aaron (Bartels), Trevor (Coss) and Chris (Price),” he said. “They let me play relaxed and just enjoy the day and the round.”
He added his game-plan was pretty simple…if he executed it.
“I just tried to keep the ball in play,” he said. “When I did miss shots, I missed them in the right spots so I kept it in play most of the day.”

Senior
Ed Fryatt used two hot streaks–an eagle-birdie two-hole run in the first round and three birdies in a five-hole stretch in the second round–to win the Senior title.
It was Fryatt’s fifth individual victory of 2026 to go along with a team title.
“I didn’t get off to a good start and I was in a grumpy mood,” Fryatt said. “The eagle got me going and then I birdied the next hole and started to play decent golf.”
He said the second day plan was simple: Catch me if you can.
“I knew I had the lead and that the guys would have to come and get me,” he said. “I tried to play it a little safe. I drove the ball great and kept the ball in play for the most part.”
He said there were still a couple of stumbles.
“I three-putted twice and that’s kind of been my bugaboo this year,” he said. “Then the next thing I knew I was only leading by two. The next hole I made a good swing but I hit it long but chipped it to three feet and made the putt and that settled me down. I birdied 15 and 16 and kind of stretched it out a little.”

Mike Brocki posted three straight birdies–two natural and one net–early in the first round as he won for the first time in Nevada Golf play.
Brocki said the early birdies got his confidence in a good spot.
“My putter was working well this weekend,” Brocki said. “I made a lot of putts. I probably made over 100 feet in putts today alone. The greens at Paiute are so pure. If you miss a putt, it’s probably because you mis-read it.”
He said he’s only played in a handful of events and said this type of competition brings out the best in everyone.
“There are a lot of good players who have serious game,” Brocki said. “It’s just enjoyable to go out and play with guys who bring out the best in the other players. It really makes you grind on every shot because they are all important.”

John Turk finished with two birdies in his final three holes of the second round to help him win the Silver crown.
Turk overcame a ‘9’ early in the second round to win for the first time in 2026 after posting three wins in 2025 in the Senior Division.
“Today was kind of wild,” Turk said. “I started three-up on Gary (Carpendale) and by the third hole I was two down…or something like that. I hit it out-of-bounds and then hit a wrong ball for four penalty strokes on the par-5. That’s not good. But, I persevered and hung in there.”
Turk added he relied on his short game both days.
“That hasn’t been the strong part of my game lately but it was good this week,” he said. “I was chipping it up to two-to-three feet and making the putts for par. My short game was definitely on.”

Barry Boudreaux had an eagle each day, a net eagle the first day and a natural eagle the second day, in winning the Silver Net Division.
It was the first win since late 2024 for Boudreaux.
“I’ve had some second-place finishes but no wins…today changed that,” Boudreaux said. “Winning gives you that little extra spark and a little more energy to want to do it again.”
He said his first day’s play was key.
“Saturday my putting was as good as I’ve had in a long time,” he said. “The greens are pure and for some reason a lot of putts went in. Today, it didn’t happen that way.”
He said posting an eagle both days definitely helped his scoring.
“The first day I birdied the hole and it was a stroke hole so that was good,” he said. “Today, I holed out on a par-5. That was totally unexpected. The one today sort of turned the round for me and got me going.”
