We have outdone ourselves this time with Margie Stephens, a longtime member who is still golfing at 87 years young and still a major part of the Carson Valley Womens’s Golf Club.
Enjoy her video and the story below.
“I love golf because you get out in the fresh air and the beauty of this course is so nice,” Stephens said. “I’ve just always loved it out here at Carson Valley and being with friends. I stil play golf because I enjoy being with my friends and I am still able to do it. God’s kept me strong … thank God.”
More About Margie
Margie Stephens has always been an active athlete, whether it was softball or bowling, which was her game of choice. Her golf passion started from the urging of her bowling league girlfriends in the 1980s. Her girlfriends convinced her to go with them to play a round at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City. Having tried golf in college, she wasn’t too keen on this idea, but they kept urging her and she finally gave in and joined them. It wasn’t love at first game; she still preferred bowling over golf for many years. Then her husband, Bob, decided he also wanted to play golf and started playing with Margie and her girlfriends. That started her attitude adjustment towards golf, becoming more passionate about the game.
At 87 years young, Margie still plays every week in the Carson Valley Women’s Golf Club (CVWGC) with a 30 handicap. Throughout the years, Margie has achieved Club Champion, three holes in one, and at least five eagles. When she dropped her first hole in one, Margie’s friends were so excited, and she turned to them and said, “Doesn’t everyone get a hole in one?”
Margie has been a member of the CVWGC since its inception and has seen not only the golf club, but the golf course go through many changes over the years, including the women’s club merging with the Mason Valley Women’s Golf Club 20 years ago. When asked what she would like to say to prospective women golfers, Margie told us, “It’s a wonderful game that gets you out in the fresh air, helps you meet new friends, all while having a good time.”
The Carson Valley Women’s Golf Club recently honored Margie at a general membership meeting with a cake and by presenting her with a special commemorative plaque.
Congratulations to Margie for her over 40 years of golfing greatness!
