Heath Harvey won for the second time in Nevada Golf Southern Region play, holding on to win the Championship Division by one stroke.

Harvey, who is a sophomore at Somerset Academy Sky Pointe High School, held a five-shot lead going into the final round but had to hold off a hard-charging Matt Mitchell to win.

Harvey was one-over through the first eight holes in the final round but played the final 10 holes in two-under-par to secure the victory.

“It was tough hanging on,” Harvey said. “I didn’t get off to a good start and it was really close at the end.”

In fact, it came down to final-hole drama as Matt Mitchell lipped out a birdie putt while Harvey parred the hole.

“Matt really put the pressure on,” Harvey said. “He was playing so well. That made me nervous but I just tried to make as many pars as I could. I thought eventually someone else would make a mistake but that didn’t happen. I stayed just far enough ahead to win.”

Harvey said his two rounds were as different as night and day as he opened with a nine-birdie 64 followed by a three-birdie 71.

“Yesterday was one of best rounds I’ve ever had,” he said. “My putting was unbelievable. I only had 24 putts. The only difference between the two days was the putting. Yesterday the putts were falling and today not a lot of them fell.”

Harvey said his second win helps solidify that his game is going in the right direction.

“It was a few years ago that I first competed in the SNGA,” he said. “And I didn’t feel like I was good enough to compete. But the past two months I’ve been playing very well and now know I can compete and win.”

Harvey also said winning a major is a family affair.

“It means a lot to win a tournament like this,” he said. “My dad (Billy Harvey) won it 30 years ago.”

The win will also boost his national ranking as he’s moved up to 62nd in the country in the AJGA’s Rolex Rankings.

Sebastian Calderon recorded two net eagles in a three-hole stretch en route to victory in the Net Division.

Calderon added four birdies (three net and one natural) in his five-under-par round that culminated in his first victory.

“It’s always been about believing that anything is possible,” Calderon said. “I decided to trust my work and everything I have put into getting better this year and it paid off.”

Calderon said his putter was a big key to his win—especially with his two net eagles in the final round.

“The putter was definitely a big factor,” he said. “You can hit a good shot but if you don’t putt well, you wasted those shots. You have to be able to putt and I putted pretty well.”

He did have a four-putt but said he made sure to shake it off.

“It’s one of those things you can’t let bother you,” he said. “You’ve just got to look forward and hit the next shot.”

Calderon added being atop the leaderboard took its toll.

“I didn’t expect to win,” he said. “Getting the win and playing two days of pretty good golf was a lot of pressure. I haven’t been able to sleep well. I only slept about 10 hours total over the tournament. My nerves were certainly there. But good food and good coffee got me through it.”
