LAS VEGAS (June 7, 2026)–Ed Fryatt (Championship) and Jay Ship (Net) won titles in the 2026 Las Vegas City Amateur. The Nevada Golf Southern Region tournament, the year’s second major, was held June 6-7, 2026, at Las Vegas Golf Club. With the win, Fryatt completed the #CityAmSlam.–by Bill Bowman
The event was part of the best week of Amateur golf in Southern Nevada: Las Vegas City Am Week.
Championship
Ed Fryatt made it two-for-two in Las Vegas City Am Week, adding the Championship Division title to his Senior Division crown he won the Friday prior to his win on Sunday at the City Am.
Fryatt was one-over-par through his first five holes of the final round with a double bogey (it was his only over-par hole of the two days) that saw him tumble down the leaderboard.
But over the final 13 holes, Fryatt put six birdies on the scorecard to climb to the top and win the crown for the sixth time. He won five straight titles from 1989-1993.
‘This week certainly boosted my confidence again,” Fryatt said. “But man…it’s been 33 years since I won this thing. That’s pretty wild. Most of these kids weren’t even born the last time I won it.”
Fryatt added winning a major is no easy task.
“The fields are impressive and there’s a lot of great golf that is played,” he said. “It’s just something you never take for granted because these are something everyone wants to win.”
Fryatt said golf has meant the world to him and to win the Las Vegas City Amateur again is special.
“The game and this city have been very kind to me,” he said. “The game gives you a lot of heartbreak and then it gives you the chance to redeem yourself.”
He found that out quickly today following the double bogey on his fifth hole of the round.
“I thought I missed my chance after that double,” he said. “Then I missed an eagle putt from five or six feet when I thought I had the chance to get those two strokes back. I didn’t make it and Colton (Rubenstein) made eagle so that made it tougher.”
Fryatt stayed focused.
“I did miss a chance on 16 (his seventh hole),” he said. “But then on 17, where you least expect to make a birdie, I hit it to 40 feet and hit a putt that never looked like it was going to miss. It went in and then I hit it to a foot-and-a-half on 18 and made birdie and thought ‘you never know.’ ”
Then came the second hole (his 11th) when he chipped in for birdie.
“That one came out of nowhere,” Fryatt said. “It was looking like a six or a seven and then I chipped it in and thought ‘OK, you’re back in it.’ ”
Birdies at the next hole as well as the par-5 ninth sealed the victory.
“I’m just so fortunate,” Fryatt said. “I’ve got a great wife (Kathleen) who supports me playing and practicing. In fact, it’s not just supporting. She kicks me in the butt to get out and compete. She came out the last nine holes to support me. It got a little emotional.”
Fryatt added the Las Vegas City Amateur is one that brings the golf world together.
“Kudos to Nevada Golf and Muni for putting on Las Vegas City Am week,” he said. “Everyone embraces this tradition and it’s great to see it keep going. There are some great names who have competed and hopefully it just keeps growing.”

Jay Ship has broken his pattern.
Ship won for the second time in 2026, ending his streak of winning one event every two years. He won the 2026 Mesquite Classic in April which was his first win since the 2024 SNGA Desert Inn Classic. That win also snapped a two-year winless streak.
Ship had three net eagles over the two days–two in the final round–and said winning again this quickly shows his game is in a good spot.
“I played really good from tee to green,” Ship said. “There was nothing I did really poorly. You can probably count on one hand how many fairways I missed. I drove it great, hit more greens than usual and had great speeds on the greens. If you put it in play out here, you’ve got a chance to make birdies and I did that.”
Ship said winning again this quickly has him optimistic.
“Maybe this means I’ll win every other event,” he said with a laugh.
In the end, Ship said winning a major is always special.
“I won the Southern Nevada Am a few years ago but winning the City Am is super special,” he said. “This is a tournament I haven’t played well before but once I had a chance to get after it and close it out, it turned out to be one I will remember for a long time.”
Ship said Las Vegas City Am Week is impressive but it’s the people behind the scenes that deserve a tip of the cap.
“I’m so grateful and proud to see Las Vegas have a week of golf like this,” he said. “People don’t realize the amount of time and work the staff puts in. From the tournament staff to the rules officials to the golf course staff, everything was perfect. It takes a lot of time and effort and the results were a great week of top-notch golf.”
