Championship

Audrey Brust birdied the first playoff hole to beat McKenzi Hall for the title in the Championship Division.

Brust had an eagle in the final round to go along with three birdies on the back nine as she won her second state title having won two years ago.

Brust, who will be a senior at Santa Clara University in California this fall, said winning at this level is a driving force.

“This was really exciting to see the hard work I’ve been putting in is paying off,” said the graduate of Bishop Manogue in Reno. “I’m excited for the rest of the summer and my senior year.”

Brust added the battle with Hall was back-and-forth.

“I was just trying to keep up with McKenzi,” Brust said. “I knew where we stood and I just tried to stay in the moment.”

Hall birdied the 16th hole in the final round to go up by one before Brust birdied the next hole and that wound up setting up the playoff.

“I chipped in for birdie on the first playoff hole,” Brust said. “I was over the back of the green and tried to land the chip right before the green. But, it came out hot and luckily it hit the flagstick and went in.”

She did have a good outlook about the chip.

“I did have a good line on the chip so that was good but if it wouldn’t have hit the flag…well,” she said with a laugh.

She said she came into the tournament with simple goals.

“I was just trying to stay in the moment,” she said. “I wanted to focus on each shot and hit each shot best I could. I was trying to focus on the process rather than the outcome and work on my tempo and balance.”

Silver State Gross

Ronda Henderson overcame shaky starts in the second and third rounds before steadying the ship each time to post a 10-shot victory in the Silver State Gross division.

After a two-over-par first round, Henderson was five-over-par through the first four holes in each of the second and third rounds but managed to get the rounds back on track…at times.

“It was a rough start the last two days,” Henderson said. “Yesterday, I had a hosel-rocket into the pond on No. 2. I haven’t done that in ages. It really shook me up and took me awhile to get settled down. That shot came out of nowhere.”

She said the last two rounds came after a solid opening round. Henderson posted four birdies the first day but just three birdies combined the final two days.

“I played great the first day,” she said. “I had a six-shot lead and other than a shot in the water on No. 17 I played solid golf.”

Then came the last two days.

“With a big lead, what happens to me is that my intention and attention are not in the right spot,” Henderson said. “It was tough to bring it home. I’m a better player with pressure on me, that’s for sure. I’d get things going OK and then run into problems again. It was definitely a struggle at times.”

She said any victory is nice, but the high-profile events add a little more prestige.

“I’m grateful for any state win,” said Henderson who now has five individual state titles to go along with eight state team titles. “Whether it’s good golf, bad golf or ugly golf…we’re all out here to win tournaments. I go into events expecting to win but it’s certainly more satisfying when you play well when you win. I didn’t play well by any means this week.”

Silver State Net

Casey Landman had net eagles on the same hole, the par-4 6th, in back-to-back rounds in winning the Silver State Net crown, her first state title.

Landman’s scores ran the gamut, from a ‘3’ to a ‘9’ and everything in between over the three rounds.

“It was a pretty wild three days,” said Landman, who moved to Vegas from the Philadelphia area a little over a year ago. “I hit the ball pretty well off the tee and this course let me hit some fuller shots into holes that left me on or near the greens.”

She said moving to Vegas has given her a new outlook on golf.

“I’m so excited to be out here,” she said. “The Southern Nevada Golf Association has events where they include handicaps and that’s so amazing. It lets everyone compete no matter their handicap. And it’s been great meeting new people and playing new courses.”

She added the three days were impressive from start to finish.

“This course fit my eye,” she said. “I had never played it before. My 95 on Monday was me figuring out where I can and where I can’t hit it.”

She added everyone seemed to be in the same boat when it came to scores.

“It seemed like everyone had some great holes…but also had some blowup holes,” she said. “And with it being 54 holes, we all had a chance to figure stuff out.”

She said her handicap, a 19, is the lowest it’s been and she’s working on getting better.

“Bogey golf is my game,” she said. “Pars are like birdies for me. I’ve been working hard since moving out here. Out here, you can play 365 days a year. I’m taking lessons and it’s just nice to see the work starting to pay off.”
