CARSON CITY (May 5, 2026)–David Hashimoto (Scratch), Richard Clark (Senior Net), Dana Whaley (Senior Net 60+) and Scott Van Acker (Senior Net 70+) won titles in the 2026 Carson City Toyota Men’s Senior Capital City Classic. Back-to-back birdies midway through the round helped David Hasimoto win the Scratch Division.
Hashimoto birdied the eighth and ninth holes in winning for the first time in five years.
Hashimoto said he stopped competitive golf until he played one event in 2025.
“This is a brand-new maiden voyage for me,” he said. “Playing in that one event last year made me hungry and I decided to play more events this year.”
He said the victory was sparked by his play on the front nine.
“That nine is always the most difficult for me,” he said. “The two par 3s are round-ruiners. I had doubles on both of them over the weekend. Today, I parred both of them so I was in decent shape making the turn and didn’t have any blowup holes on the back which was also nice.”
Ah, yes…blowup holes. The holes that leave players scratching their heads.
“It just feels like you give up quite a bit of your soul with blowup holes,” Hashimoto said with a laugh. “In the end, you’ve just got to not be scared of any shots and just make your best swing possible.”

Richard Clark played his last three holes in four-under-par (net eagle, natural birdie and net birdie) in posting a four-stroke victory in the Senior Net Division.
It was Clark’s first victory in about eight years.
“I just kind of relaxed a little,” he said. “I hit a lot of smart shots. I don’t hit it very far off the tee and I’m laying up on par 4s that I used to go for. But I hit a lot of approach shots close and made a few par putts that really helped.”
Clark’s loss of distance off the tee is to be expected as he comes back from a battle with cancer.
“About a year ago I fought esophageal cancer,” he said. “I lost about 50 pounds and I was down to about 130 pounds after all the chemo, radiation and surgeries that came with it. But afterwards, everything went as perfect as it could have been. In the beginning the outlook was bleak but tomorrow is my one-year visit with my oncologist and I know he’s going to say everything is good.”
Now that he’s back, he said he’s got a lot of work to do to get back in form.
“When I came back, I couldn’t believe how short I was hitting the ball so to hit it as well as I did today was just great,” he said. “I’m back up to 148 pounds and lifting weights to get my strength back so I’m working on it.”

Dana Whaley finished net eagle, net birdie in rallying for a two-shot win in the Senior Net 60+ Division.
“It was fun today,” Whaley said. “I played with two guys, Alan (Krogness) and Ted (Bolstad) who were very enjoyable to play with.”
Whaley said his short game saved the day.
“I chipped in for birdie (net eagle) and then made a 15-footer to save par (net birdie) so my chipping and putting were solid,” he said. “I only had three blowup holes–one I tripled–but besides that it was a good round.”
He added that his early-round play had him dialed in.
“I had bogeys saved by chipping and putting over the first five holes and that got me going,” he said. “We had a lot of rain last night and this morning and the rough was thick and very wet. Everyone was scrambling and I wound up having probably the best iron play I’ve had in a long time.”
The Nevada Golf Northern Region is continually appreciative of Whaley’s long term sponsorship of the Carson City Toyota Series. And we congratulate him on the big victory!

Scott Van Acker put five birdies on the scorecard (one natural and four net) in winning the Senior Net 70+ Division by a shot.
“I haven’t played this well in a long time,” Van Acker said. “I hit the ball solid and a lot of my putts were pretty good.”
It was Van Acker’s first victory.
“I’ve been searching for this day for a long time,” he said. “I had a wonderful day. The ball went where I wanted it to go and I kept within myself.”
He said one club in his bag really stole the spotlight.
“After my driver, for five holes in a row, I had 105 yards in,” he said. “I hit the same club, my pitching wedge, and hit the greens and had a lot of shots pretty close to the pin.”
Now it’s time to keep the momentum going.
“I didn’t have any errant shots or out of bounds shots,” he said. “It was just a good day and hopefully I can keep playing like this.”
